The Albany

Pub Guide
The Albany

Location

105 Donald Street
Cardiff CF24 4TL
United Kingdom

In an area with a large student population, the Albany has remained a true local pub with a mixed clientele and a friendly welcome from the licensees Jeff and Cheryl, the assistant manager Richard and their team. Built in 1895, it started life as a coaching inn, but the stables have now been knocked down and this area has been converted into a secluded beer garden.

Quay St

Branch member, and secretary, Brian Francis shares his view of The City arms:

I have to admit that my favourite pub is the City Arms.

It’s been in its present format for over a year under the stewardship of licensee and Manager Chris Partridge who is exceptionally keen on his Real Ales.

Chris has recruited a number of like minded staff, like his deputy Will who is a keen home brewer. They all love their beers so the customer should always interact with a bar person who is knowledgeable. Now that’s not like your ordinary pub is it?

The “Discovery” is situated in Celyn Avenue, a short distance north of Roath Park Lake. It is named after Captain Scott’s ship which set sail from Cardiff on his epic journey to the Antarctic in 1900. The “Terra Nova” lounge (Scott’s second ship from 1910) has an interesting display of pictures from these voyages.

The Gwaelod Y Garth is a stone built pub in the village of Gwaelod – Y – Garth, located within the boundary of the City and County of Cardiff. The pub and village name is derived from the Welsh for “Foothills of the Garth” as that is exactly its location. It is a popular meeting place, the hub of the local community and for ramblers and cyclists, even the occasional hand gliding enthusiast, it is a popular starting and finishing point.

Spectacular views across the valley are offered from the windows and from the beer garden.

The Landsdown

Pub Guide

Location

Lansdowne Road
Cardiff CF5 1PU
United Kingdom

Branch member, and secretary, Brian Francis shares his view of The Lansdowne CF5 1PU:

For many years the Lansdowne pub on the corner of Lansdowne Road and Beda Road was regarded as a “barely alive” local occupying a distinctive large building that is largely unoccoupied.

How it survived for so long is a bit of a mystery, but unlike a number of pubs bordering on the unprofitable, and threatened with demolition, the Lansdowne has recently been turned around and come alive.

The Mount Stuart

Cardiff CF10 5EB
United Kingdom

Laura Collins, Branch member, shares her views of the Mount Stuart at Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay - CF10 5EB.

A newly opened (August 2013) Wetherspoons pub, it seems that the landlord is keen to stock a range of loc-ale, and on first visit there was a good range of real ale on the handpumps and at least 3 local real ciders to choose.
