Cardiff Campaign for Real Ale is delighted to announce that it will shortly present its award for Pub of the Year 2009 to the Vulcan Hotel, Adamsdown.

This threatened hostelry on the edge of the city centre has recently seen a massive surge of interest following the news that it would be lost as part of the St David's 2 shopping development.

John Lamb, the branch's social secretary, said the following:

There is a very traditional atmosphere about the Vulcan and it is right in the heart of the community.

It appeals to young and old, from the students who go there between lectures to the regulars who have been going there for many years.

We were all agreed it was very deserving of the award.

The Vulcan was selected from a wide selection of Cardiff pubs based on its high standards, historical significance and its exceptional level of community spirit.

The branch will also present runner up awards to the Pen & Wig, Cathays and the Mochyn Du, Pontcanna.
